1. Purpose and Scope

This SOP lists the currently approved locations for handling and storage facilities for safe and correct handling of genetically modified microbes (GMMs) or organisms (GMOs) within the Section for Research, Department of Microbiology, OUH.

Several laboratories at Section for Research at MIK are approved for contained use of GMMs/GMOs (GMM/GMO Risk Group 1 and 2) at laboratory scale.

2. GMMs and GMOs to be used

  • Viruses: Bacteriophages, Baculovirus, Cytomegalovirus, Adenovirus (Adenovirus based vectors), Lentivirus (Lentivirus based vectors).
  • Prokaryotes: Bacteria - non-pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli with and without plasmids, Helicobakter pylori, Borrelia burgdorferi, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Neisseriaceae, Simonsiella, Kingae, Eikenella, Moraxella, Suttonella and Cardiobacterium.
  • Eukaryotes: Fungi – Saccharomyces cerevisiae og Schizosaccharomyses pombe.
  • Mammalian cell lines: Human, monkey, rat and mouse, and derived cell lines.
  • Insect cells and Caenorhabditis elegans.

3. Responsibilities

  • All employees and researchers working with GMMs/GMOs in the section laboratories are responsible for following this SOP.
  • GMO responsible must ensure that all staff are trained and familiar with the different biosafety levels and restrictions of each location.
