Olav B. Smeland is a consultant psychiatrist and translational psychiatry researcher with a PhD in neuroscience. He is part of the Centre for Precision Psychiatry group at the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital, headed by Professor Ole A. Andreassen. Dr. Smeland has supervised one PhD candidate who completed her PhD in April 2025, and he currently serves as the main supervisor of three other PhD students. His research focuses on applying advanced statistical tools to large-scale genetic and multi-omics data to uncover the biological underpinnings of psychiatric disorders and their relationship with clinically related traits and disorders. Through a series of studies, Dr. Smeland has shown that the genetic susceptibility of psychiatric disorders overlaps with phenotypes such as neurological diseases to a greater extent than previously recognized, indicating shared molecular genetic mechanisms. Dr. Smeland aims to transform these insights into improved clinical care for patients with severe mental illness and to address the pervasive comorbidity across mental and somatic disorders. He is also interested in developing novel prediction tools for enabling precision medicine approaches in psychiatry. Dr. Smeland has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including first and senior authorship papers in Nature Neuroscience, Nature Reviews Neurology, Brain, World Psychiatry and JAMA Psychiatry. He is a member of the Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder and Suicide research working groups in the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, the world’s leading collaborative effort in psychiatric genetics.
