OUS Comprehensive Cancer Centre

Oslo University Hospital (OUS) was designated as a European Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) by The Organisation of European Cancer Institutions (OECI) in 2017. This concept, on how to organise a cancer centre within a university hospital, is vital for the consistent delivery of high level quality of care and research within the cancer field. OUS-CCC was successfully reaccredited by The in 2023 for five new years.

OUS CCC Management Structure

Cancer management demands coordination across organizational silos, disciplines and professions. Not least due to higher prevalence and the fast-growing development in knowledge and technology. The structural coordination of cancer care and research are managed through The CCC Board (Kreftstyret), The CCC Professional Council (Fagrådet), and The CCC Research Council (Forskningsutvalget).

The CCC Board contributes to strengthening the line managements’ power of action across organisational divides and where activities are located. This is strived for by reinforcing the overall ability to coordinate work with operational challenges and the development and implementation of the cancer strategy. The work includes diagnostics, treatment, research, care and rehabilitation.

The CCC Professional Council is the extension of the board with additional expertise from several medical professions, department heads, and patient and union representatives.

The board has mandated several project groups and committees, including The Committee of Cancer Coordinators, Network of Facilitators Documenting Standardized Cancer Pathways, Cancer Registry Project, Cancer Nurse Competence Project, Key Quality and Activity Data Overview Project.

The objective of the CCC Research Council at OUS is to enhance the utilization and advancement of cancer research at OUS by encompassing various aspects such as clinical research, translation-research, foundation research, and research-based innovation. While operating under the guidance of the CCC Board at OUS, the Research Council at OUS will also independently initiate projects in multiple areas. The research budget is 90 million Euros with 630 full time employees (2022). OUS CCC includes two institutes, Institute for Cancer Genetics and Informatics (ICGI) and Institute for Cancer Research (ICR).

Furthermore, diagnosis-specific program management teams are designated to coordinate patient pathways, deliver updated institutional in-detail treatment guidelines and running clinical trials. There are 23 pathway management teams in OUS. These consist of professionals from the disciplines involved within the cancer pathways, often a surgeon, oncologist, radiologist, pathologist as well as patient pathway coordinators from the different departments.
