Requirements for board certification in neurosurgery in Norway
A. 5 1/2 years of service in a neurosurgical department*

B. 1/2 year of service in a neurological department.

*In Norway neurosurgery is exclusively done at the University Hospitals in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø. Up to 12 months of the service in neurosurgery may be substituted with research activities or service in other relevant specialties.

C. Accomplishment of a 150 hrs course curriculum under the superintendence of the Norwegian Medical Association (120 hrs are covered by the Scandinavian Courses at Beitostølen).

D. Minimum requirement for operative experience is 600 procedures of which there should be > 120 craniotomies, > 100 CSF diversions, > 150 spine surgeries, and > 25 functional procedures.

Board certification is given by the Norwegian Medical Association following recommendation of the Neurosurgical Specialty Committee. The committee currently has the following members:
