Improvement of treatment results for bone sarcoma patients
In a recent original article in Acta Oncologica the experience over two decades in the management of primary high-grade bone sarcomas at The Norwegian Radium Hospital was analyzed. The results show a significant improvement of the treatment results for bone sarcoma patients treated in this single institution in the period 1980-1999.
In the article - entitled "Management of high-grade bone sarcomas over two decades: The Norwegian Radium Hospital experience" important aspects on referral patterns, prognostic variables, outcome-measures and time-trends were presented for patients with Ewing and osteosarcoma.
Analyzes of 20-years clinical management of these patients are presented and show the gradual improvement in survival and the reduced need for limb amputations.
The first author, Liv Hege Aksnes (photo above), is currently a research fellow studying the quality of life and long-term consequences of therapy in these patients. Co-authors on the article are Kirsten Sundby Hall, Gunnar Folleraas, Anna Elisabeth Stenwig, Bodil Bjerkehagen, Ingeborg Taksdal, Metter Winderen, Øyvind S. Bruland and Gunnar Sæter.
