Serena's work involves looking at the Oslo-CoMET (colorectal liver metastases) samples from a biobank of tumors from 280 patients to investigate expression of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. This is being carried out using immunohistochemical staining of metastatic tumors with four different markers for cytotoxic, memory, helper and regulatory T cells. Quantification of these is determined in multiple regions of the sample; in the center-of the tumor, in the invasive margin (proximal to the tumor) and in the ‘normal’ tissue (distal from the tumor). Results from this will be used to analyse how these expression levels affects, or can be used to predict, patient treatment and outcome in CRC and CLM.
