A close up of a primary adenocarcinoma from the colon investigated in a study by Thorstensen et. al. was chosen as the visual on the cover of the February issue of Neoplasia (Vol. 7, Number 2). Lin Thorstensen was a post doc in the Lothe lab until recently. She is now a scientist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

In this article, WNT signaling, which is important in normal development as well as in cancer, is studied in Norwegian colorectal cancer patients. One or more of eight analysed genes revealed mutations or methylation modifications in more than 90% of the cases. Patients with a mutated APC (adenomatous polyposis coli) gene affecting all b-catenin binding sites in their tumor, had a poor disease outcome.
