Project:
Mechanism behind pre- and post-ejection velocity spikes in normal left ventricular myocardium
Supervisor:
Otto A. Smiseth
Aim:
Measurements of contraction and relaxation velocities of the heart muscle (myocardium) during the heart cycle have become a standard application on cardiac ultrasound scanners after the introduction of the tissue Doppler imaging technique a decade ago. These measurements have revealed certain characteristic spikes in the velocity trace that consistently occur just before and after the ejection phase of the left ventricle (LV). The aim of this study is to determine the mechanism that causes the LV myocardial pre- and post-ejection velocity spikes.
