5. Main aim of research group:
To understand the molecular mechanisms regulating growth in fission yeast, in particular the transition from G1 to S phase and entry into meiosis.

6. Some important recent results (with a few key references):
We have recently established that there is no classical cell cycle checkpoint in G1 phase for fission yeast (Nilssen et al, PNAS 2003). Nonetheless, there is a delay in G1 progression after UV. We are presently characterising this delay and the pattern of gene expression in a normal G1-S transition, in collaboration with Jürg Bähler, Cambridge. A similar and even longer delay can be observed before entry into meiosis. We are studying the molecular details of this delay in collaboration with Stephen Kearsey, Oxford University, and Jürg Bähler, Cambridge.

7. Methods in current use:
Standard molecular biology methods, synchronisation, flow cytometry, centrifugal elutriation, GFP-tagging and detection
