Department of Cell Biology
Department head: Professor Erik Boye
Department secretary: Peter Wiedswang
Department of Cell Biology houses three research units:
- Regulation of DNA replication, headed by professor Kirsten Skarstad
- Cell-cycle regulation in eukaryotes, headed by professor Erik Boye
- Proteomics & Mammalian Cell Biology Section, headed by professor Per O. Seglen
All three units work to characterize mechanisms governing cell growth and multiplication. The studies of bacterial and yeast cells are concentrated on DNA replication and cell cycle control, whereas mammalian cell studies focus on autophagic protein degradation and apoptotic cell death. The department also serves as a service and competence centre for cancer proteomics at The Radium Hospital.
The group leaders are affiliated with the departments of Molecular Biosciences and Pharmacy at the University of Oslo, where they lecture at undergraduate and graduate courses. Supervision of graduate students and doctoral candidates takes place at the Department of Cell Biology. Several foreign research fellows and visiting scientists are also associated with the research teams.
